It seems just about anytime I see the words “Old Vine” on the label of a wine bottle, I buy it, especially when it’s on sale which was the case with Zynthesis Old Vine Zinfandel. To me, there is something special about the intensity and character of many Zinfandels coming from older vineyards that I find hard to resist!
There is a general belief that older vines, when properly handled, will give a better wine. Grape vines can grow for over 120 years. After about 20 years vines start to produce smaller crops and average yields decrease, leading to more concentrated, intense flavored wine. The majority of the grapes used for Zynthesis come from their vineyards in the Lodi area in California’s Sacramento River Delta which has optimal weather conditions for growing Zinfandel. Many of the vines range in age from 30 to 70 years old with a few as old as 100 years. After pressing, the wine was aged in both American and French oak barrels and then it was enhanced by the addition of a touch of Petite Sirah and a bit of Barbera to give us the finished product.
Wines with a big, bold taste such as this one, stand up well to food with equally big flavors such as spicy jambalaya or paella. If spicy isn’t to your liking, try serving Zynthesis with barbecue. Zynethsis can be found at most wine stores and supermarkets. It is currently a featured wine at BevMo’s 5 cent sale which puts it at two bottles for $20 which is about where it should be. So, until the next time, what are you drinking? Salute!
